    Order of St Olav




    Ver. I: 1847 - 1882 (Carl Fredrik Carlman - Oscar II, 18K gold)

    1847-73: 3 classes, Grand Cross, Commander (with Star) and Knight. The name of the order was "Den norske Sanct Olafs Orden" (The Norwgian Order of Sanct Olaf) until 1906.

    1855-60's: Some of the Knight and Commander types were bestowed with Brilliants. The brilliants were arranged in a circle around the Lion in the centre of the Cross instead of the normal rings in blue and white enamel.

    1873: Commander Class divided into two classes on July 19th, 1873, the day after the Coronation of King Oscar II in Trondheim. Commander 1st Class (with Star) and Commander 2nd. Class (without Star). The new Commander 2nd. Class was only awarded to foreigners until 1891, when the first one was awarded to a Norwegian recipient.

    The 1847 mini Miniature is quite rare. Not many St Olav were awarded between 1847 and 1860. The miniatures were made on individual basis by the ones who had been awarded St Olav. This could be made by any jeweler in principle. However one would assume that the main jeweler in Stockholm was used. No hallmarks are found on this small item.


    This 1847 mini Miniature shown above. This has the classical look of the 1847 Awards with the straight hinge between the crown and the main medal. Also note that the O's are open and of the type made on the larger awards.

    This is another miniature of the 1847 version. This one is made without the circular red and white rings around the center. One would also here assume that the main jeweler in Stockholm was used. No hallmarks are found on this small item either.

    This has the classical look of the 1847 Awards, but the straight hinge between the crown and the main medal is replaced with a slight curly one. Also note that the O's are of the open type, and of the type made on the larger awards.

Please note that the swords are of the pre-enamel type pointing down as it was made according to the Swedish way of doing it.

    These 1860 mini Miniatures are also quite rare. The miniatures were made on individual basis by the ones who had been awarded St Olav. This could be made by any jeweler in principle. However one would assume that the main jeweler Tostrup in Oslo was used. No hallmark stamps are found on these small items.

    This mini Miniature shown above is different from the 1847. This still has the classical look of the 1847 awards, but the former straight hinge between the crown and the main medal has now moved to a 1860 type. Please also note that the text is missing from the reverse side. The O's between the arms carries 2 arms to one side in the center of the O's. this is typical of the 1847 issue. Further the O's on this are closed. It could mean that this is a very early type of the 1860 issue.

    The crown is wide which is also typical of the 1860 issue. Further one can see silver on the tips of the top arms at the front. This is most likely some sort of solder used to fix swords to this Miniature. So this was originally a Military version, but the swords has been lost at some stage.
